What is the difference between main cap and lollipop bearings and which would you recommend for a large(200+lb) Muni rider?
Main-cap bearing holders are preferred. There are exceptions, such as those on the Pashley brand unicycles. Lollipop bearing holders are shaped like a lollipop. The inverted stem goes inside the end of the frame. Taiwanese lollipops are smaller than the frame. Two bolts go through the outside of the frame leg, into the lollipop. This works fine if you’re planning to ride only on the street. If you ride off curbs or off-road, the extra stress of your weight landing directly on the seat can cause the frame to crack where the bolts go through it. The one exception is Pashley (made in the UK). The metal used in both the frame and the lollipop is much, much stronger. Plus, the Pashley bearing stem is machined for a tight fit into the frame. The bolts that secure the lollipop to the frame pass completely through both sides of the frame, and are secured by nuts. We’ve not had a single warranty issue with this setup.
