What is the difference between LIVESCAN and AFIS?
• A LIVESCAN is the computer system that electronically captures and transmits the fingerprint images and data to an Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). The AFIS is a database that houses numerous arrest fingerprint images which can be searched against to determine a person’s identity and any previous arrest record.
As these systems evolve, AFIS is evolving to ABIS, which stands for Automated Biometric Identification System. ABIS will house multi-biometrics, such as fingerprint, face, iris and palm images. Typically, the biometric database is separate from the demographic database and the two are linked.
LIVESCAN typically refers to a type of fingerprint scanner (tenprint). LIVESCAN scanners are used to capture multiple fingerprints for the “flat” capture and enable “rolling” of each fingerprint, much like that captured when ink fingerprinting. Whereas a PIV (personal identity verification) scanner is typically a single or dual fingerprint capture device. You’ll note that the LIVESCAN scanners are typically Appendix F rated if listed on the FBI IAFIS Certified Products List.
