What is the difference between Life Coaching and Therapy / Counselling?
A life coach is not a therapist or counsellor. Life coaching is about the present and moving into the future. Therapy and Counselling is generally about focusing on the past. Life coaching does not look at the past except in the context where past patterns are identified which can help the client move forward or change a current behaviour pattern. Life coaching focuses on facts, actions and measurable outcomes. In counselling and therapy, an area of the client’s life can be explored over a period of time. However, in coaching once a challenging behaviour has been identified, the client is encouraged to start thinking of a solution and taking action to improve the issue. Life coaches do not give advice, as it is important to encourage and challenge the client to find their own solutions and actions to begin taking control of their own lives. While the coach is there to give honest feedback to the client and challenge the client’s self-limiting beliefs, the client should be encouraged to
