What is the difference between landscape fabric and a standard sheet of plastic?
Julia, Cole Fox: Landscape fabric is placed over the soil to reduce weed invasion. It’s air and water permeable and greenery is planted through holes or slits. Then it’s covered with a mulch of bark, gravel or other surface dressing. The idea is to reduce the amount of maintenance required to keep planting beds looking neat. Standard plastic will stop weeds but it does not allow moisture penetration. It can be used if you are trying to keep anything from growing in an area, such as under a deck.
