What is the difference between Krumping and Clowning?
Tommy: As clowning and krumping are both aggressive freestyle, the difference is that krumping has now shaped into more of an outlet for anger and oppression. Clowning is done with costumes and a bit of humor. But its still the same dance. Mike: I understand that the different troupe members paint their faces in preparation for competition. How important is painting in this movement? Tommy: Face paint gives the dancer a mask of sorts. It gives them the confidence they need to get out there and dance in front of people. Dancers have both worn and not worn make up in this movement. Mike: You created an event called BattleZone. Describe it. Tommy: Back in 2000, there was about 50 rival clown groups that developed because Tommy couldnt accommodate them all to be a part of his crew. They were always talking about whos crew was better than whos, so Tommy created a dance competition where the audience votes for who is the best crew and called it Battlezone.
