What is the difference between journalism and creative non-fiction?
Journalism is the pursuit of fact-based reporting about current events. Creative non-fiction enhances fact-based writing with storytelling techniques such as characterization and literary language. Both forms of non-fiction draw their narratives from reality, from actual situations found in a community the writer observes and explores. The Department of Writing offers a Major in Creative Non-Fiction and a Minor in Journalism and Publishing. Why do you recommend Writing students take a double major? Enrolment in workshops is limited and spaces are not guaranteed. Students are recommended to take a second major in another discipline so that graduation is not delayed. Can I take 300/400-level courses? No. A first year student cannot take upper-level courses in our department.
