What is the difference between jonquils and daffodils?
Although being in the same genus i.e. narcissus, jonquils are quite distinct. The name jonquil is normally associated with 2 sections of the narcissus family – jonquilla and tazetta. The true jonquilla has 1 to 3 flowers per stem mainly and are quite dainty and mostly highly perfumed. Foliage is bright green and along with the stems of the blooms quite rounded, almost reed-like. The bulbs are not large and quite a deep mahogany colour mainly. The tazettas have at least 3 or more and indeed sometimes quite a lot of blooms per head, again scented. The foliage of the tazetta is much like the normal daffodil which is blue-green and quite broad. Bulbs are quite large and heavy.
