What is the difference between Japanese and European cut Karate Gis?

A Japanese cut is a slightly shorter Gi in terms of sleeve and trouser leg length; worn primarily for Kata so that Judges can see the foot position more easily. The sleeves are designed to come approximately 2 – 3 inches above the bend of the wrist/ankles. The European cut is a full length sleeve and trouser leg to ankle/wrist bone; more commonly used for Kumite where foot position is not a deciding factor by the judges. Obviously this is not cast in stone, you can perform Kata or Kumite in either cut of Gi!
