A chemical bond is the force, which holds together two or more atoms or ions to form a large variety of compounds. The forces which are responsible for such bonding and the shapes of the molecules formed are as a result of chemical combination. The bond which is present between two different ions including cation and anion, is known as ionic bond. For example, sodium chloride is a ionic compound and ionic bond is present between sodium positive ion and chloride negative ion. Covalent bond is a bond which is formed by sharing electron pairs between two atoms. The compounds contain covalent bond may be categorized as polar compounds or non-polar compounds. For example, bonds present within a water molecule are covalent bonds.
