What is the difference between International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition (ICD-10) and ICD-10-Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM)?
The clinical modification (CM) was necessary to incorporate the level of detail needed in a morbidity classification and to support U.S. data needs. In the U.S. we have a mission to improve our ability to measure health care services provided to our patients, enhance clinical decision-making, track public health issues, conduct medical research, identify fraud and abuse and design our payment systems to ensure services are appropriately paid. By creating the CM it will enable the US to meet these needs.
