What is the difference between Hy-Vee Mother’s Choice milk-based and soy-based infant formulas?
The main differentiation between the milk-based and soy-based infant formulas is the protein used in the formulas. The protein in milk-based formulas comes from cow’s milk which has been heat treated, and the sugar or carbohydrate is lactose, unless the formula is specifically manufactured to be lactose-free. Soy-based formulas are milk-free and lactose-free – the protein in these formulas comes from a soybean source that is also easily digested. Sometimes babies suffer from lactose-intolerance or a certain allergic reaction to milk-protein. If you suspect that this might be the case with your baby, speak to your physician, and ask if he or she recommend a soy-based formula or possibly an extensively hydrolyzed formula (formula in which the protein has been predigested, decreasing the likelihood of a reaction). Soy-based formulas are also an option for parents who seek a vegetarian-based diet for their infant.
