What is the difference between HIV and AIDS? Does being HIV+ necessarily mean you have AIDS?
• HIV is the virus (human immunodeficiency virus) that causes the disease AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). The HIV virus damages your immune system, the part of your body that you need to fight infections. If you are infected with the HIV virus, that doesn’t mean you automatically have AIDS, but over time, as the virus affects your immune system, you develop AIDS.
