Hi, Chicken is a collective noun given to a group or flock of hens. Over the live of a “chicken” it has many different name depicting their life, it starts of as a chick, females are then known as pullets until they are a year old, then she becomes a hen. Males start life too as chicks, become cockerels and after a year old become cocks. Birds bred for the table are very young, and this is a very tender meat , as the bird grows older, this meat becomes very tough and chewy. You can eat end of lay chicken, but it has to be cooked slowly, the best way to eat it is in soups.( these are known as boiling fowls) Keeping chickens is great fun, fresh eggs, some young birds for the table, older birds for soups.
