What is the difference between having a Masters in Clinical or Counseling Psychology and having a Ph.D. in these fields?
There are several differences in Counseling and Clinical Psychology. First, Counseling degrees are generally housed in Education departments. Clinical degrees are usually housed in Psychology departments. Because Education departments have traditionally been considered less rigorous departments than Psychology departments, degrees in Counseling are not always considered as prestigious. This perception may or may not be accurate. At some Universities the rigor and quality in the Department of Education far exceeds that of the Psychology Department. You should be aware of this perception and the fact that it may not be true. The second difference is that Counseling Psychologists have traditionally dealt with more day to day issues, while Clinical Psychologists have dealt with more severe problems.
