What is the difference between Granite and Marble?
…Granite is one of the hardest materials on earth. Granite is composed primarily of quartz, feldspar and mica. Other minerals may be present in the stone creating its unique colors, textures and patterns. Used as a countertop material, it is resistant to scratches, acids, stains and heat. It is long-lasting, durable and available in a wide variety of colors, textures and unique crystal patterns that create a warm and inviting environment for you kitchen or bath.
The main difference between granite and marble is that granite is a highly dense material composed deep inside the earths core while marble is formed from sediments under the seabed. Both solidify into stone after millions of years but the mineral composition of the two stones makes marble and granite react different to various chemicals and household cleaners.
While both stones are quarried from the earth, granite and marble are very different. Granite is crystallized minerals that are formed deep in the earth’s mantle at extremely high temperatures. It is characteristically very hard and highly resistant. Marble starts out as sediment animal skeletons and shells, plant matter, and silt at the bottom of bodies of water. After millions of years, this solidifies into stone. Since its main component is calcium, marble is softer and less resistant than Granite to acids such as vinegar and citrus beverages.
