What is the difference between getting fired or laid off from a company?
If you are laid off, it means your position was eliminated within the company. This can happen if the firm is restructuring or downsizing. It happens a lot in a bad economy. Say there were ten receptionists at a company, but the company decides they only need six receptionists. The company will lay off four recpetionists. If you are fired, the company is getting rid of you, not the job. They will hire someone else to do the job you used to do. This usually happens if you are bad at your job or broke company rules. For example, if you were an employee stealing company property, you would be fired. You might also be fired if you are always late for work.
