What is the difference between evading taxes and avoiding taxes?
Usually, about 20 years in jail! The law says that it is illegal to evade a tax, or to try to defeat a tax, but there is no law that says that it is illegal to avoid a tax. In fact, the U.S. supreme Court says that there is no law that requires you to arrange your affairs in such a manner that you must pay even one cent more than the minimum required by law. The reason why the IRS puts deductions on the Form 1040 is to help you avoid paying more tax than required. One has every right to avoid paying excess taxes. Tax evasion, however, means that you know that you owe the tax and you are not paying what you owe. Along with protection against frivolous lawsuits, avoiding probate, and estate planning, you may take advantage of the service being offered to you in order to assist you in avoiding the paying of excess taxes, but we will not assist you in evading taxes, or breaking the law in any other way.
