The difference between entering a PIN versus signing a receipt has to do with how the merchant processes the transaction. When you enter your PIN (Debit/ATM button) at the merchant terminal, the purchase is processed through one of the point-of-sale networks shown on the back of your card. You can get cash back, but the merchant may charge you a transaction fee.
