What is the difference between Engineered and Solid wood flooring?

A. Generally, when a home has a concrete slab rather than a raised wood sub-floor, we recommend an engineered product. Engineered products are manufactured of hardwood typically using a three, or five ply cross directional laminated construction , with a top layer of premium hardwood. This construction counter acts the natural tendency of wood to expand and contract with changes in teperature and humidity, especially over concrete. Solid wood floors, typically 3/4 inches thick, are uniquely suited for wood sub-floors. However, with the addition of plywood secured on top of concrete, we can install solid wood. Most sand and finish jobs, custom stained on site, consist of a solid wood product.
