What is the difference between DSL and Cable Modem Connections?
Cable modems are typically faster for downloads than most if not all DSL lines, when the cable is well maintained and functioning properly. There are some disadvantages that cable has when compared to DSL. The cable Internet is delivered on an RF network. As such the network is vulnerable to degredation from interference from outside sources such as electrical and radio interference. Cable Internet is a shared media and as such the more people on a specific “leg” of the network the slower the speed will become. The upload (return) path to the Internet on cable is av ery narrow signal. The space on the line that is allocated for the return signal is below all space allocated for video signals. The uplink transmission must compete with others on the same “leg” of a cable network and is often delayed due to noice and most cable companies prohibit a constant upstream use in their Terms of Service. Additionally, the cable is less secure than DSL just due to the nature of the ability to “eav
