What is the difference between drainback and closed loop systems?

0

A closed loop system refers to the pipe loop. It is a complete, closed circle, when the pump is switched off the pipes and manifold remain filled with fluid. In areas of the country where sub-freezing temperatures are experienced this fluid must contain anti-freeze to prevent damage. In a drain-back system the pipe circle is not uninterrupted. It is broken by a tank. A drain back system utilizes the tank into which the fluid will “drain back” when the pump is off. This type of system is more efficient and deals with excess heat production very well, but it is more difficult to install and requires a larger pump. Your dealer will be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each configuration with you.
