What is the difference between determinate and indeterminate sentences?
In determinate sentencing, judges select a specific number of years which a defendant will serve. The actual sentence may be reduced by factors such as “good time.” However, with indeterminate sentencing judges impose a range of years, “1 to 15 years” is an example. The actual time an offender serves is at the discretion of a parole board.
