In determining financial need, one of the most important factors is whether you are classified as a dependent or independent student. Dependent students must include parental information on the financial aid application and FAFSA. Independent students should include information only on themselves and their spouse (when applicable). You are automatically classified as independent if you: Will be 24 by Dec. 31 of the award year; Are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces; Are on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces; Are an orphan or ward of the court; Have legal dependents other than a spouse; Are married; Or are a graduate or professional student.
