In context of a digital library, metadata is data about digital objects whereas data can be equated to digital objects themselves. Besides descriptive metadata that describes digital objects, digital libraries also require i) administrative or technical metadata so as to ensure longitivity of digital objects; ii) structural metadata to facilitate navigation within digital library; and iii) identification metadata for tracking different versions and editions of same digital work.
