What is the difference between cooperative education (co-op) and an internship?
A co-op comprises three progressive engineering work experiences with the same employer, alternating with semesters at Penn State. An internship is a one-semester engineering-related work experience. A student can complete an internship any time after his or her first semester at Penn State; co-op work assignments usually begin following the spring semester of a student’s second year, after he or she has decided on a major. Go to Engineering Career Resources & Employer Relations for more information about short-term work assignments, including co-op, internship, and research positions.
