What is the difference between COIL binding and COMB binding?
Spiral coil-bound books can lie perfectly flat. Comb binders punch larger rectangular holes with larger spaces in between, and because of the way the comb binding is made, books cannot lie flat when pages are turned back. Spiral coil can be used for tinier books than comb binding, because comb binding has a solid piece of plastic in between each “tooth” of the comb. I have made 2″x2-1/2″ necklace notebooks with the spiral coil machine, and those would have looked too clunky with comb binding. The photo shows a spiral-bound 2″x2-12″ neckace book, a comb and a spiral coil. Most people think that spiral coil has a very professional look, whereas comb binding has a more utilitarian appearance.
