What is the difference between cohesive and adhesive failure?
Cohesive failure is when the adhesive itself tears or breaks. Adhesive failure is when the bond between adhesive and the surface of the substrate breaks. When assessing the performance of an adhesive or a sealant the first step is to observe the nature of the failure, for it gives clues to the cause of the failure or the source of the leak path.
