What is the difference between Class II base rock made from recycled material vs mined?
…virgin or recycled materials? Typically roadbeds are made from crushed rock. A great deal of research and experimentation has gone into figuring out just what types of rock, how to crush the rock, what size and what mix of sizes makes for the most stable roadbed and longest lasting roads. The material needs to compact well. so there is little settling after completion of the road. It needs to be stable, so the new pavement is well supported and does not flex when heavy loads are applied. More recently more and more construction and paving projects use recycled materials. These are generally material generated by ripping up previous roadbeds and used as a base course for the new road. Recycling can save a great deal of money as all of the previous roadbed material need not be hauled off and disposed of, it is processed on site (crushed and screened) and used for the new construction.
