Chinese Taipei is Taiwan. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan. The Chinese claim Taiwan is still part of China, so in order to make China happy, Taiwan is called Chinese Taipei. During the Olympics, the Taiwanese even marched under a different flag than their national flag. If you’re unaware of the history behind this, I’ll give you a brief overview. After 1911, when the Chinese Republic was proclaimed, two dominate groups emerged from among the various warlords looking to control China: the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang Party. These two groups were briefly allied, but spent most of their time at war. During World War II, the two groups called a truce in order to fight the Japanese, but hostilities resumed following Japan’s defeat.
