What is the difference between certified free range and organic pork?
Not much at all really. Organic pigs must have access to pasture in daylight hours. The standard does not state stocking densities. They must be fed at least 95% organic feed with no artificial additives or antibiotics added. Piglets are not weaned before 6 weeks of age. There is no tail docking or teeth clipping. Castration without pain relief is allowed. Removable nose rings are allowed. Vaccination is not encouraged. No farrowing crates or stalls are used. Only natural veterinary treatments are to be used. Antibiotics can be given to sick and injured animals. Full traceability of animals from birth to table. The whole farm should be managed organically. No herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Farms are inspected at least once a year. This is just a very brief description of organic. You do not have to be certified to be organic.
