Either one use towers, that’s why if you go to ATT Wireless (which is GSM-based) website you’ll see coverage maps with a lot of gaps across US. Difference is in the way they transfer data over the air, also GSM phones have SIM-cards that allow users easily change phones and carriers without even calling provider and transfer contacts between phones seamlessly, where CDMA in the US does not allow it.
