What is the difference between Carbon Balancing and Carbon Sequestration?
• Carbon sequestration is the uptake and storage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through carbon ‘sinks’ (e.g. forests and forest soils). Carbon balancing is the idea that the man-made emissions of carbon dioxide may be calculated, reductions in these emissions made and the impact of the remaining emissions offset by increasing carbon sequestration by the relevant amount (i.e. storing the same amount of carbon dioxide emitted in new forest sinks).
