What is the difference between brushed homespun, brushed cotton, and a screen printed flannel?
We receive lots of questions regarding flannel and brushed homespun. Our site carries three different types of flannels. There are screen prints, brushed cottons, and brushed homespuns. Here’s a bit about each: SCREEN PRINTS: Here a flannel base or griege good is used and a pattern is screen printed onto the flannel base. Often the base is white, or can be yellow or any color the manufacturer feels will best pick up the colors of the screen print. So, what you see on the back of the fabric may not necessarily “match” the colors used on the front. These flannels are usually thick and luxurious, and the fact that the back of the fabric does not necessarily match the front is of no consequence with traditional piecing techniques. If you are using these flannels for a raggy edge quilt, the background color may show a bit. To some quilters, that does not matter. It is your personal taste and decision.
