Sometimes they are the same and sometimes they are different. Boreal forests are Coniferous forests in northern latitudes. Coniferous forests can also exist in southern latitudes where they are not called Boreal forests. To sum it up Boreal is Coniferous, but Coniferous is not always Boreal.
