What is the difference between Bioengineering & Biomedical Engineering?
This was selected as Best Answer Vivek, I think they are fairly interchangeable… although “Biomedical Engineers” tend to focus more on operational aspects of science and technology (hence the “medical”) bit and therefore are often more in the area of instrumentation, imaging, prosthetics, mobility aids, etc. Bioengineering is an interesting term that has a professional connotation (e.g. as a noun) and also a practitioner connotation (e.g. as a verb). As some of your other responders have suggested, bioengineers tend to be more interested in biological systems, signalling pathways, systems biology, etc. They are often not “engineers” per se, although I know several tissue engineers who call themselves “bioengineers” and have backgrounds in (for example) chemical engineering. On the “practitioner” side, many people in biotech refer to certain processes as “bioengineering”. For example, protein engineering of a new antibody could be referred to as bioengineering.
