I know what you mean – I still haven’t sussed the US terminology. 1) Bachelor degree The first time you go to university in the UK to do a degree it will be for a Bachelor’s degree. These are three years long. There are arts and science degrees, shortened to BA (e.g., bachelor of arts) and BSc. You select a specific degree course before you arrive – I get the impression that there’s a lot of switching of subjects at American universities. While you are doing a first degree, you are an undergraduate student. Freshers are brand new students (first years). We don’t have different words for the other years otherwise. Bachelor degrees are graded at three levels: 1st, 2i (two one), 2ii (two two), and 3rd. 2) Masters degree If you have a Bachelor’s degree and want to specialise in a subject you then do a Masters degree.
