A Direct Vent gas unit uses a single pipe 6-5/8″ pipe with a 4″ linear that draws outside air in through the 6-5/8″ for combustion and exhaust through the 4″ linear. While “B” vent units generally use a single 4″ linear for exhaust and use air from inside the house for combustion.
