What is the Difference between Artist and Professional Gesso?

0

So, what’s the difference between the two versions of Utrecht Gesso? (Besides a few bucks, that is.) In fact, both products are archivally sound, lasting generations with good technique and proper care of the finished art object. Both are highly concentrated, thick formulas that can be diluted, or used full strength for texture. Both versions of Utrecht Gesso are made using a combination of the same traditional and modern ingredients- Marble Dust (Calcium Carbonate, or Chalk- “Gesso” is Italian for chalk), Titanium White pigment, and acrylic polymer emulsion. The difference is in the proportion of the chalk & whiting pigment. The Artists’ Gesso is slightly reduced in whiting, chalk and is a lower viscosity. If you prefer a brilliantly white ground that covers a dark support like hardboard or linen, the Professional is more for you. If you like a bone-dry, chalky and absorbent surface, the Artists’ Gesso is an excellent choice.
