What is the difference between antique and modern cutting of diamonds?
All diamonds are many millions of years old. Characteristics such as colour and clarity were determined at the time of creation; when the diamond was mined has no effect of the grade. Diamonds do not “fade” over time. One thing, however, does change; the cut. Typically, an old cut diamond (pre-1919) will have more fire than a modern stone, while a modern stone (post-1919) will have more brilliance. Put simply, fire is the flashes of colour you see reflected from a diamond, brilliance is the reflection of white light. Neither style is “better” than the other; ideal cutting is in the eye of the beholder, and is not simply a matter of cutting to certain angles of reflection.
