A certified mask (either CSA or HECC) means that the mask and the cage have passed all of the tests to ensure the safety of the player who is wearing this mask. Theses tests include impact (the puck hitting the mask or a player falling) and a test to ensure that no piece of equipment (stick, butt end, skate) can enter through the cage of the mask.
