They are basically the same thing. The correct term is radiologic technologist or radiographer, but we are also called x-ray tech., x-ray technician, radiology tech. Some states do offer a limited license. I would not recommend going this route, as there will be many exams you could not legally do. This makes you undesirable to prospective employers. A radiologic technologist can do all types of x-ray (including fluoroscopy, portable and surgical studies). You can also cross train and get licensed to do mammography, CT or MRI scanning. In order to be a licensed RT, you must attend an accredited radiologic technology program. You cannot take your licensing examination without that diploma. You can attend a hospital based program (they are all two years in duration) and get a certificate. Or you can go to a community college program (also 2 years) or a 4 year college program. Once you are licensed, nobody asks you where you went to school. Your future employers want to see your licenses,
