What is the difference between an LCSW and a MFT?
Much like a MFT, a LCSW is a licensed clinical social worker, who has graduated from an accredited institution, gained hours toward licensure and passed two examinations given by the Board of Behavioral Sciences. By comparison, the category of Marriage and Family Therapist is newer and more focused on helping individuals with relationship issues, while LCSW training emphasizes harnessing external resources to assist in producing change within a system of care. In practice, there is often little difference, as both categories regularly provide psychotherapy to individuals, families and children. Rather than focus on a specific category, it is most important to find a therapist that connects with you and that has the expertise to help you with your goals.
