What is the difference between an insurance company and a fraternal benefit society?
Fraternal Benefit Societies (benefitting our brothers and sisters) serve a dual purpose. On the one hand they offer affordable insurance protection to their members and, on the other hand, they provide members with mutual aid and support through the fraternal group benefits and discount programs. Unlike regular insurance organizations, fraternal benefit societies operate through councils, like chapters, granges or lodges, for the exclusive benefit of their members and for their charity work done in local communities. How is UCT organized? UCT has nearly 100,000 members organized into more than 300 local councils in cities and towns throughout the United States and Canada. The local councils are grouped into 31 grand councils, and our Carolinas Grand serves both North and South Carolina. Our highest governing body is the Supreme Council, which consists of representatives of each Grand Council. Where do I fit into the organization? You belong to one of the six local Carolina councils.
