What is the difference between an Honor Guard and a Color Guard?
Many people commonly confuse the functions of an honor guard with a color guard. While the uniforms are very similar, and the functions of both are very formal and ceremonial, they are each unique. An Honor Guard is primarily for funerary functions. It stands by the casket during visitation, accompanies the casket during a procession, folds and presents a flag during a funeral, and so forth. A Color Guard marches in parades and special ceremonies, performs the presentation or posting of the colors (flags), and so forth. We are fortunate to have an award-winning Color Guard here at the Division of Fire. Our Color Guard won the First Annual Kentucky Firefighters Association Guard Competition last year.
