What is the difference between an FCE and a fitness to work exam?
An FCE (functional capacity evaluation) is conducted by a kinesiologist, physical therapist or other providers in a gym type setting to assess the functional level of n individual. The evaluation criteria is developed specific to the job demands provided by the employer, and the client is tested to their maximum physical capabilities. A report is sent to the employer or referring party detailing the physical capabilities, restrictions and recommendations for modifying or increasing work demands. A fitness to work exam is completed by a physician and is based on the medical status of a client. An assessment is completed and a report is generated based on the worker’s medical status, as it relates to their job demands. Sometimes an FCE is requested to assist the physician in making the fitness for work determination.
