What is the difference between an F-1 student and a J-1 student?
An F-1 student is an individual who is in the U.S. to pursue a full-time academic or language program; the vast majority of international students at NYU obtain F-1 status. The J-1 Exchange Visitor program is designed to promote mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchange. There are many categories in the J-1 program and student is one of those categories. J-1 students are usually sponsored by their home government, a U.S. government agency, or by their home or host University. Students who are funded solely by personal or family funds do not qualify for J-1 status.
