What is the difference between an EV and a PHEV?

An EV or BEV (Electric Vehicle or Battery Electric Vehicle) must be plugged in to obtain energy to drive the vehicle and has range limited by the battery pack. A PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) has the option of running just on the battery or off the gas engine, and so, the PHEV does not have to be plugged in and the range is unlimited per periodic refilling of the fuel tank. The new Nissan Leaf is going to be an EV while the new Chevy Volt will be a PHEV. The main benefit of a PHEV over an EV is that you do not need to wait a long period of time to charge your vehicle. The downside is that PHEVs will cost more money due to having two engines. As charging infrastructure and battery technology continues to improve you will be able to charge your EV in a much shorter period of time. With Level III charging you can reach an 80% charge of an EV within 20-30 minutes.
