What is the difference between an e-mail account and an e-mail alias?

account Alias difference e-mail

Each e-mail account is accessed by a separate username. An e-mail alias is an alternative name for one e-mail account. For example, janedoe@aksi.net is an e-mail account which has the user name janedoe. Alternatively, janedoe-comments@aksi.net and janedoe-thepainter@aksi.net are aliases for the e-mail account janedoe@aksi.net. The mail for all three names come to the same mail box and are accessed by the username janedoe. If her husband John wants his own e-mail box, then, in theory at least, he will need a separate e-mail account. Note, that some e-mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook 2000 allow Jane to separate the mail sent to janedoe-comments@aksi.net from janedoe-thepainter@aksi.net and janedoe@aksi.net even though they are in the same mail box.
