What is the difference between an Assured Shorthold and an Assured Non-Shorthold Tenancy?

An Assured Shorthold Tenancy will be granted to anyone taking up a tenancy at one of our private sector properties or for anyone under the age of 18 whose tenancy is secured on a Guarantor. This tenancy type gives you security for an initial period of six months, after this it will continue on a weekly basis. As long as your tenancy is conducted properly and the landlord does not require the property back then you are able to stay in residence for as long as you wish. There are further terms attached to this type of tenancy which affect your rights these should be discussed with your Housing Officer. An Assured Non-Shorthold Tenancy offers further security to the tenant. As long as the tenancy is conducted within the terms of the agreement then the tenant can remain at the property for as long as they wish. This type of tenancy also offers additional benefits that should be discussed with your Community Housing Officer.
