What is the difference between amending and renewing a registration?
An amendment only allows filers to make corrections or additions to a registration statement within the same financial reporting period. This includes replacing estimated financial information on an initial registration statement with actual financial figures upon the conclusion of the organization’s first fiscal year. Filers cannot change the dates covered by the financial report via an amendment. If the period covered by an initial report must be changed (because the wrong year was entered in the initial registration statement), filers will need to contact the Charities Program Manager for assistance. A renewal allows filers to update their financial information. For example, if your initial registration statement covered the period July 1, 2005 – June 30, 2006 and you are now ready to update your financial information to reflect information for the period July 1, 2006 – June 30, 2007, you do this by renewing (not amending) your registration. Filers cannot change the dates on the financial report via an amendment, and they cannot change the Authorized Officer’s name via an amendment. If the period covered by an initial report must be changed because the wrong year was entered in the initial registration statement, filers will need to contact the Charities Program staff at charitable@sos.state.co.us for assistance.
